Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

  • Class 2a: Mr McAvoy and Mrs McDaniels
  • Class 2b: Mrs McFarland, Mrs Mills and Mrs White
  • Class 2c: Mrs Walters and Mrs Carr
  • Additional Adults: Mrs Whitehead

Year 2 is the final year of Key Stage 1. The school day for Year 2 is from 8:50am to 3:20pm.

Being in Year 2 is great fun at Moulton. We study interesting topics covering all areas of the National Curriculum and which helps us learn about our world. We also get to grips with our key skills in reading, writing and maths, ensuring that finish the year ready for Key Stage 2.

Our Year 2 topics are: ‘Wriggle and Crawl’, ‘Walter Tull’, ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’, ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’, and ‘Land Ahoy’. We also host exciting activities to help introduce these topics such as a minibeast hunt and a messy morning, as well as putting on a Christmas Play and many other exciting things!

Please see the topic maps and Y2 Curriculum Overview on this page for more information about what the children will be learning this year.

Reading practise is a really important part of Year 2 as this is when the children will start to apply their phonic knowledge more confidently to read books and become more independent readers. Reading lessons are taught in Year 2 and throughout the wider curriculum as children will start developing their comprehension skills and also progressing from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’.

Reading at home at least three times a week is still really important as children need this regular practise to become fluent. Sharing books is also very important so children also develop a love of reading and will develop their vocabulary and language skills.

See the Y2 Recommended Reads list on this page for suitable books.

  • Spellings are issued most Mondays and are tested on Fridays.
  • A short homework task will be set via the Google Classroom on a Wednesday and will be due in on the following Monday. Homework activities usually alternative between a Maths and English task that will help children to secure previously taught skills in class.

PE Lessons

We have 2 PE lessons each week and the children’s kits will now need to remain in school. Kits will be sent home at the end of each half term to be washed. This will be an ideal time for you to check that the PE kit and footwear fits correctly as we grow a lot in Year 2!
When children have PE please make sure all earrings or jewellery is removed in advance prior to coming into school and long hair is tied up, as staff members will not be able to remove them themselves.

Our timetabled PE days are:

  • 2a: Tuesday and Wednesday
  • 2b: Tuesday and Thursday
  • 2c: Tuesday and Wednesday
